The NIR project provides a computational intermediate representation enabling interoperability across neuromorphic frameworks and hardware. Supported by nine simulators and five platforms as of July 2023, it allows model portability between tools like Lava-DL, Nengo, and SpiNNaker2 via save/load operations. An extension named NIRData facilitates data exchange for spiking neural networks. The software was conceived at the Telluride Neuromorphic Workshop in September 2023 and published as a Nature Communications article in September 2024.
